On Tuesday, January 13th residents and visitors to Abu Dhabi are invited to spend an evening with José Fernandez, Global Brand Ambassador for Robert Mondavi Winery, Napa Valley on the Anantara Eastern Mangroves Pool Deck. Over an expertly matched four-course menu, by Executive Chef Aztaj Eddoukani, José will delve into the Mondavi family story spanning the last 100 years – one of passion, pettiness, family squabbling, wild success, dramatic failure, and of course, wine. A California native, José began his career, at just 16, working in the cellar at Robert Mondavi Private Selection in California’s beautiful Central Coast.
Robert Mondavi established his namesake winery in 1966 with a vision to create Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the world’s finest. He chose To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley as the home for the Robert Mondavi Winery. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon in the world.
Today, when talk turns to Napa Valley royalty, Robert Mondavi and the Mondavi family indisputably qualify as the ruling monarchy, and indeed of the US wine industry. Perhaps most notably, Robert Mondavi, along with Julia Child and Alice Waters, helped lead America’s culinary revolution by tirelessly preaching that Napa Valley wines were just as good as those from such storied regions as Bordeaux.
The four course menu will see Chef’s California Crab Cake paired with the 2013 Woodbridge Sauvignon Blanc, whose crisp and bright flavours of tropical fruit and gooseberry, shines alone and alongside food. The soup course, an Apple Butternut Squash with Smoked Quail Confit and Vanilla Foam will offer the opportunity to sample the 2013 Private Selection Chardonnay, a pale straw yellow colour with fruity apple, lemon rind and spiced vanilla aromas. Chef has chosen one of his personal favourite dishes, Grilled Wagyu Beef with Wild Mushroom and Truffle Cauliflower Purée to accompany the first red wine of the evening, the exotic, powerful and structured, 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, emerging from the glass with masses of dark fruit, smoke, licorice, menthol, plums and cloves. Rounding off the evening will be the wild red cherry and berry character, laced with rose and oak spice notes of the 2012 Pinot Noir, Private Selection, served with a sumptuous Chocolate Sticky Date Pudding.
