Eyes are the windows to the soul or so I have heard. But when those eyes appear overly tired with discolouration of the skin beneath them, even though you feel as fresh as a cucumber, it becomes a cause for concern. Dark eye circles are more common than you might think, and appear in both genders.
The most natural thing to do about these dark circles is to want to get rid of them, but for this to work; you have to find the root cause and why they appeared in the first place. From my experience, I have learnt that there are a number of factors which lead to the appearance of these dark circles, and as a result make you look more tired than you probably are.
Some of the most notorious culprits that lead to dark circles include:
Aging: As the years go by, the collagen and elastin within your skin weakens and thins out in addition to losing its subcutaneous fat. This leads to sagging of the skin and as a result makes the blood vessels under your eyes visible. This if not attended to, casts a dark shadow under your eyes leaving you ‘looking’ tired.
Genetic factors: Your gene pool can be a deciding factor of your dark circles. And if you are genetically predisposed by one or both of your parents having the dark shadows under the eyes, then do not be overly surprised if you get them as well. This happens when you lose your subcutaneous fat prematurely and as a result a hollow grove forms below your lower eyelid.
Sun exposure: Exposing yourself to the sun without wearing any sunscreen can also lead to severe dark circles and hyperpigmentation. This is due to the wrinkles caused by the premature aging of the skin hit by the harmful UV rays.
Pollen season: Although the Gulf is not covered by a wide variety of green places, there is still that big chance of coming across one such area, especially if you are in Dubai. And during the pollen season, you will find yourself susceptible to minor or major pollen allergies. One of the symptoms is extreme eye-rubbing which triggers the inflammation of blood vessels hence dark pigmentation around the eyes.
Other causes of dark circles include:
- Poor lifestyle choices
- Lack of sleep
- Underlying Medical conditions
- Dietary deficiencies
- Chronic fatigue
Banishing dark eye circles
Once you have identified what is causing the discoloration beneath your eyes, it is only worthwhile to start the process of eliminating the dark circles and giving life back to your eyes. In addition to using concealers and skin lightening cream, there are a number of treatments that you can have to eliminate or minimise the pigmentation. These include:
Laser skin resurfacing treatment: This treatment, which is readily available at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery, focuses on stimulating the growth of new and healthy skin through collagen regeneration under your eyes. The results show minimized dark pigmentation, and with continuous treatment, you can eventually get back your fresh-looking eyes.
Pulse Laser Treatment: Also working in conjunction with laser, this treatment destroys the melanin (responsible for skin pigmentation), leaving your skin smooth and unblemished. One session is not enough to leave your eyes free of the dark circles, so if you go for this, you will need to have at least four sessions.
Hyaluronic acid: Although naturally present in our bodies, if injected or applied on the skin, Hyaluronic acid can prevent the effects of aging. In fact, hyaluronic acid has been promoted as a “fountain of youth” in quite a number of countries. Since it also fades dark spots from the skin, once used on dark circles over time it changes the pigmentation to its former glory.
Blepharoplasty: This treatment, also available at Dubai Cosmetic Surgery, is used to correct droopy eyelids. If used under the eyes where the dark circles are more severe, it tightens the skin leaving very little room for the blood to pool, hence correcting the discolouration there.
Skin tightening: If loose and saggy skin is the reason you are always looking tired without feeling tired, then having a treatment to tighten the skin can banish the dark circles by promoting better blood circulation and less pooling. There is a wide variety of non-invasive skin tightening treatments out there to choose from.
Mesotherapy: If your panda eyes are as a result of excessive padding under the eyes, then Mesotherapy is the treatment for you. Active ingredients within this treatment help improve blood circulation in the target area by dissolving the fatty deposits, which lightens the skin pigmentation.
