Nearly three quarters (72%) of UAE residents plan to escape the heat this summer, with Europe their preferred holiday destination, according to research released today by leading global insurer Zurich.
More than a quarter (27%) of respondents to a YouGov survey will take at least one European holiday between June and August, with the continent especially popular with Westerners (56%) and Emiratis (42%). The Asia Pacific region (18%) is the next most popular destination, particularly for Emiratis (26%) and Indian expats (20%).

Many UAE residents will be vacationing closer to home, with 15% saying they expect to travel to countries in the Middle East excluding the UAE. Arab expats (26%) and Emiratis (19%) are the most likely to be holidaying within the region this summer.
Zahir Sharif, General Manager UAE, Zurich Insurance Middle East, said: “UAE residents are among the most well-travelled people in the world with the summer heat heralding a foreign holiday for nearly three quarters of the population. While the cooler climes of Europe are the most popular destination, it seems holidaymakers are still chasing the sun, with the Middle East, Asia Pacific and South Asia all hot spots this summer.
“As with all oversea trips, at Zurich we recommend you take out adequate travel insurance to ensure you are protected against any eventuality while on holiday.”
Not everyone will be rushing for the airport, however, as more than a quarter (28%) of residents say they do not intend to leave the UAE on holiday this summer. Single people (32%) are much more likely to be staying in the UAE, with only 23% of those married with children willing to contend with the summer heat. Similarly, only 17% of Westerners say they will stay in the UAE this summer, compared with 31% of Arab expats.
