Solo exhibition of H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum titled Seamless Loop opened last evening at Meem Gallery, Dubai. Exploring themes of iconography, heritage and tradition, Seamless Loop will be on till October 30, 2016.
This exhibition marks H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum’s second solo show in the Emirates; the first taking place at Bonhams Dubai in 2011. She has exhibited widely throughout the Middle East in group shows, prestigious prizes and through specialist commissions.
The 16-work strong exhibition comprises of 8 textile pieces, and 8 screen prints. H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum’s point of departure was to consider symbols she found endemic of the UAE, icons that symbolized the country.
During the official opening of the exhibition, H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum said, “I have been working with the concept of iconography and symbols since 2012. For me, inspiration could be found throughout my homeland – the UAE, even if many others could not seem to find it. I have played with the very notion of what an icon really represents, and how it can be used to instill feelings and thoughts in the observer”.
Selecting images of the falcon, the camel, the horse, the gazelle, the fish, the leopard, the fort and the palm, H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum began experimenting with sketches and collages, playing with colour and texture. She began to work with the original images and reduced them to their most simple form, after which she began manipulating the symbols digitally, creating an almost kaleidoscopic design; conjuring thoughts of Islamic geometry.
Talking about the creations, she added, “This is a process ‘construction, deconstruction, reconstruction’. The symbol is thus created, diffused by its handling to be deconstructed and re-constructed anew”.
This sense of process is “most important and attractive” says H.H. Sheikha Wafa Hasher Al Maktoum and the final piece acts as a monument to the time and process of art-making.
